The Startup Way in Serbia — Startup Način u Srbiji
I wrote an intro for the Serbian version of The Startup Way that I’m publishing here in hopes of bringing international attention to the fast-growing Serbian startup ecosystem and sparking a country-wide dialogue. Scroll down or click here for the version in English.
Erik Risov (Eric Ries) Startup način dostupan je sa popustom u pretplati i uz besplatnu dostavu u Srbiji. Danas je počelo štampanje prvog tiraža a isporuke su predviđene za kraj mjeseca. Imao sam zadovoljstvo čitanja ranih verzija knjige i da pratim Erikovo iterativno izvođenje Startup načina na tržište u pravom maniru Lean Startup metodologije. U proteklih nekoliko mjeseci sam takođe sarađivao sa Nikolom M. Stajićem u vezi prevoda i obrade knjige za srpsko tržište koja izlazi u izdanju njegove izdavačke kuće iLearn.
Ekskluzivno, slijedi predgovor koji će biti objavljen u srpskom izdanju Startup načina.
Startup način u Srbiji
Tokom posljednjih deset godina, imao sam priliku da otkrijem Erikov Startup Lessons Learned blog na samom početku, sarađujem sa njim i njegovim IMVU suosnivačom Markusom Goslingom te na kraju da im se pridružim u Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE); našim svestranim pokušajem da promjenimo američko tržište javnog kapitala kako bi bolje podržavalo preduzetništvo u javnim preduzećima. Tako sam imao gotovo jedinstvenu priliku da budem svjedok tipu transformacija opisanim u ovoj knjizi. Duboko vjerujem da možemo usvojiti Startup način širom Srbije kako bismo podstakli ne samo srpske startupe i preduzetničke organizacije već i postojeće vladine i nevladine organizacije, ali i državne firme.
Postoje dva preduslova da bismo omogućili ovu sveobuhvatnu Startup
način primjenu u Srbiji: preduzetnički ekosistem i jednaka prilika i podrška
za sve koji žele da nauče kako da budu preduzetnici. Novčana sredstva će
potom uporedo pratiti početni uspjeh na svjetskoj sceni.
Počnimo sa gajenjem preduzetničkog duha (dr Kerol S. Dvek u Stanju uma pokazuje da je ovako nešto moguće), obučavanjem budućih preduzetnika, i prikazivanjem uspjeha koji su vrli srpski preduzetnici već postigli kako u matici tako i u dijaspori. Uporedo, moramo djelovati usklađeno i usvojiti međunarodno uspješnu praksu i zakonodavstvo za podstrekavanje preduzetništva. Zasigurno posjedujemo talenat, Startup način nam ukazuje put, a danas lokacija igra sve manju ulogu u globalnoj ekonomiji. Potom, kao što ova knjiga ukazuje, treba nam svestran sistem podrške koji bi omogućio svima koji žele da nauče preduzetničke vještine priliku da ih iterativno izoštravaju i naposljetku inspirišu druge.
Ovo nije pusti san. Ovo se već dešava. Srbija je dom globalno uspješnih startupa i budućih „jednoroga” (unicorns) koji već godinama upražnjavaju Lean Startup metode, sve brže širećim organizacijama za programersku i startup obuku i preduzetničkim zajednicama. U 2017. godini, gotovo 2000
programerskih firmi je osnovano u Srbiji a neke od najvećih svjetskih ICO su predvodili startupi iz Beograda. Po prvi puta ikad, bili smo svjedoci udru-
živanja vodećih ljudi i grupa na našoj startup sceni pod okriljem Inicijative Digitalne Srbije istodobno podržane od strane naše preduzetničke zajednice
u dijaspori koja se je takođe po prvi puta okupila. Vlada Republike Srbije
je prepoznala priliku pa će tako od ove godine učenje Python programskog
jezika biti sastavni dio osnovnog obrazovanja, a Vlada ima akcioni plan u 35
tačaka za unapređenje IT sektora u 2018. godini.
Srbija je na istorijskoj prekretnici dok se uporedo čitav svijet hvata u koštac sa neizvjesnošću i sve češćim tehnološkim iskoracima u 21. vijeku. Sveobuhvatna uspješna transformacija u stilu Startup načina može nas postaviti na čelo liste uspješnih društava. Srpski izumitelji poput Mihajla Pupina i Nikole Tesle su povezali i osvjetlili čovječanstvo u 20. vijeku. Ukoliko djelujemo zajedno, možemo iznjedriti svjetske preduzetničke lidere koji će oblikovati 21. vijek.

I had a pleasure of reading early versions of Eric’s book and I witnessed how he iterated the final product in the true Lean Startup style. In the last several months, I collaborated with Nikola M Stajic to help with the translation and adaptation for the Serbian market.
The Startup Way in Serbia
Over the last decade, I was fortunate to discover Eric’s Startup Lessons Learned blog early on, collaborate with him and his IMVU co-founder Marcus Gosling, and eventually join them at the Long-Term Stock Exchange. This provided me with a somewhat unique vantage point to witness the kind of transformations described in this book. I deeply believe we can successfully adopt The Startup Way to foster new Serbian startups and entrepreneurial organizations but also successfully transform our existing NGOs, companies, and state-run firms.
To enable these The Startup Way transformations in Serbia, we need two prerequisites: entrepreneurial ecosystem and equal opportunity and support for anyone to learn to act as an entrepreneur. Funding and world’s attention will follow as we radiate success.
It starts with cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset (as Carol Dweck’s Mindset showed this can be done for the growth mindset), providing would-be entrepreneurs with universally accessible education and tools, and showcasing word-class Serbian entrepreneurial success that exists both in the homeland and in the diaspora. In parallel, we need to act together to adopt internationally well-established public policies and industry practices that spur entrepreneurship. We certainly have the talent, The Startup Way management style shows us how, and today less than ever location doesn’t matter in the global economy. Next, we need a comprehensive support ecosystem that allows everyone to learn entrepreneurial skills by doing, iteratively hone their success, and inspire others with their spirit.
This is not a far-fetched dream. This is already happening. We have globally successful startups and budding unicorns practicing lean startup, thriving grassroots education and growing entrepreneurial communities. In 2017, almost 2000 new programming firms were founded in Serbia and Belgrade was home to some of world’s biggest ICOs. For the first time ever, we witnessed cohesive action of the local ecosystem through the Digital Serbia initiative supported by galvanization of the Serbian entrepreneurial diaspora. Serbian government is taking notice, too. Learning Python became part of required elementary school curriculum and they adopted a 35-point plan for supporting the IT industry in 2018.
Serbia is at a historic crossroad as the entire world is struggling to adapt to the 21st century uncertainties. Successful The Startup Way transformations can put us at front of the pack. In the 20th century, Serbian inventors like Pupin and Tesla connected and illuminated humanity. By acting together, we can foster globally-transformative entrepreneurial leaders of the 21st century.
